Artist Profiles » Paul Deacon's Maritime Paintings
Paul was born in Dartmouth, England in 1953 to a family with strong nautical and artistic traditions. He moved with his family between England and Ireland before setting off to sea in the Merchant Navy as a young sailor.
At sea he worked on cargo vessels working around the coasts of Europe and North West Africa.
Paul took every opportunity to observe and record the many facets of a seafarers life, which has empowered him to portray a wide variety of vessels in a full range of weather conditions and with an acute eye for detail and reality.
Paul spends many hours poring over old books and researching the battle plans of seafaring nations to record with great accuracy these amazing battle scenes.
Paul decided to emigrate to New Zealand in 1995 to enjoy the peaceful countryside and fantastic sailing waters.
Between family and work commitments Paul has sailed in a number of unique sailing vessels in European and New Zealand waters. He remains passionate about the sea and frequently sails on the waters of the Hauraki Gulf.
His work and accompanying articles have been published in international magazines such as “Classic Boats”, “ Australian Artists” and “Norske Veritas”.
