Its not all that I do - far from it - for I've a busy life beyond the camera. I'm a down to earth guy who enjoys the same sort of things we all do; travelling, cycling, diving & fishing or simply catching up with friends over an ice cold beer. But alongside all these things there's my photography. Its certainly not all that I am . . . . but its a fair part of it.
I was born and bred in the UK but moved to New Zealand to further both my life and my career. I've spent the last 7 years based in my home island of Guernsey (no, you've probably not heard of it!) working in a busy commercial photography studio. Buoyed by a booming offshore banking economy, our clients were mostly international finance houses and this created a unique market, where the work is limited, but the standards are very high. As such I was required to shoot a wide variety of subject matter, from retail products and advertising concepts to commercial architecture and corporate portraits. No two days were ever the same and with clients in London, and Jersey there were frequents trips across the Channel. Over my years in the business, I have honed my skills to a high standard and brought them with me down-under. I now work in Auckland and shoot a similarly diverse array of subjects.
Photographic technology and technique have never evolved so rapidly. There is always something new to learn and it's a constant - but enjoyable - education staying abreast of developments. The digital revolution has changed the medium in so many ways and still continues to push the boundaries of what we know and what we can expect, but great pictures transcend all of these factors. All of my work now originates digitally - and much of it manipulated to a lesser or greater degree in post production. In my eyes, the end result is key; digital or film, straight or manipulated, a great shot is a great shot - no matter how you get there.
